Internet is centralized or decentralized?

What is decentralized to Centralized?

The Internet has its origins in decentralized design, which have been long forgotten over the years. The initial Internet services were clumsy and hard to use even if you were a tech-savvy person. During the period of the ‘dot-com’ era, an entire generation of entrepreneurs were motivated to bring the power of the Internet to more and more people all over the world. Over the years, Internet services became simpler to use and evolved from a decentralized system to a centralized design. It is not only much simpler to maintain centralized services, but it’s easier to gain profits from them also. The promise of centralized services boils down to choosing convenience over decentralization.

The Good Old Days

Before the evolution of the Internet, there was Usenet. Usenet was the earth’s largest and the first online community. Anyone can run their own server. They could connect to other computers through dial up and start sending or receiving messages. The Usenet was organic and not controlled by anyone. As long there is connection to a single Usenet server, everyone could get access to a fascinating new world of information. Like a moth to a flame, people were attracted to the Usenet.

For a real time communication, there was IRC. No centralized organization took control of this communication medium. Anyone could run their own IRC server in case they needed. They could also join public servers and join chat rooms.

The World Wide Web was introduced a decade after Usenet came. The WWW made a new promise: anybody could host a website on WWW’s own server. They could also buy a DNS domain name to point to the website. These websites would be linked to each other, which created a decentralized web full of data and information.

The Shift to a New Internet

The process of shifting to a new decentralized internet from a centralized version will be tedious. As of now, there is already a considerable measure of force toward combination. There's a ton of talented people and a lot of money that is giving fuel to the fire of centralization.

The past of open source and decentralized frameworks was characterized by an absence of financing and less hope for the future. Thus, open source items and systems were no match for the juggernauts of the web.

The universe of open source and decentralized frameworks that we're fabricating today, however, is characterized by an overflow of financing and splendid hope for what's to come in the future. Tokens and Block chains have changed everything.

Blockchains and Tokens

Block chains and tokens are the two basic critical puzzle pieces for empowering the ascent of the decentralized web.

Blockchains empower coordination and associations over company lines more than ever. They enable a wide range of individuals to meet up and concur upon data without trusting each other.

Tokens, on the other hand, enable incentives across the national and company lines unlike we have ever seen before. As long as they are widely distributed and decentralized, they enable us to make private economies around open stages. They enable various people and organizations to cooperate towards a typical reason.

Previously, the Googles and the Facebooks of the world had the capacity to out motivate and out organize all the lesser and more open rivalry. Later on, the best capacity with regards to incentive and association will rest with the open tokenized frameworks that are controlled by the blockchain. With Blockstack and Ethereum and Bitcoin and Litecoin, this capacity for global incentives and organization is precisely what we’re fighting for.

Is This What We Wanted?

The internet of the upcoming future is still unknown. We need to pause, step back for a moment, and try to fully understand the concept of a centralized Internet. Today we have a chance to make an impact and make a difference for the eventual future of the internet. While picking comfort over decentralization, users are regularly settling on a certain decision of believing the centralized administration and consenting to their plans of action. We give our information to Facebook and consent to them pitching it to sponsors in return for utilizing their service.

There are cautioning signs that the internet is driving towards advance centralization, and glints of expectation that another flood of decentralization is about to take hold. Late progressions in Bitcoin and Blockchain technology can possibly take us back to the guaranteed place that is known for a genuinely decentralized, free, and open Internet. There is a considerable measure of work to be done, however, in any event, there is a promising end to present circumstances.
